AND THE OSCAR GOES TO

The Top 10 Movies Where Cannabis is the star

For as long as there have been movies, the cinema has celebrated pop culture. While the critics may not have been kind to many of the top movies promoting the cannabis culture, stoners would easily give the Oscar to any of these cannabis cult classics.

Cheech & Chong; Up in Smoke
It’s not often a pot comedy can be turned into a trilogy but that’s exactly what Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin were able to do starting with this 1978 classic. The movie focuses on two stoners that unbeknownst to them drive a van filled with marijuana from Mexico to Los Angeles, all with a bumbling cop on their tail during a road trip filled with misadventure.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
While Bill and Ted aren’t ever seen smoking weed in this 1989 comedy, anyone who has ever seen it knows the boys were clearly doing more than eating piggy sundaes with Napoleon.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
As any cannabis connoisseur knows, sometimes molly leads to the munchies. The fact that one could make a movie about that though is a surprise. This ridiculous sounding 2004 film chronicles Harold and Kumar’s quest for White Castle while avoiding the cops, running from a cheetah and even finding time for a bit of romance.

Pineapple Express
While most “stoner” films aren’t’ critical successes, Pineapple Express broke the mold with a Golden Globe nomination for James Franco. The plot centers on Seth Rogen, a process server and Franco, his dealer who wind up on run from hitmen and corrupt cups after witnessing the dealer’s boss murder a competitor.

Friday
In 2021 Ice Cube launched his Fryday Kush cannabis brand, but in 1995 he teamed up with Chris Tucker to make Friday the movie. The two smoke a stash of marijuana that Smokey (Tucker) was supposed to sell to Big Worm. Big Worm attempts to collect his money from Smokey, who inadvertently incriminates Craig, subjecting both to Big Worm’s ultimatum: pay $200 no later than 10:00pm that evening, or Smokey and Craig will be killed. The plot centers on the hijinks that follow.

The Big Lebowski
Despite it’s popularity now, The Big Lebowski wasn’t a box office hit when it released in 1998. The Coen brothers’ crime comedy stars Jeff Bridges playing Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski whose biggest claim to fame was being an avid bowler until he was assaulted as a result of being mistaken for a millionaire with the same name. When the millionaire’s wife is kidnapped he hires The Dude to deliver the ransom. The plot takes off when The Dude’s friend schemes to keep the money.

We’re The Millers
This 2013 comedy is a powerhouse of talent starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis and Emma Roberts focused on a small marijuana dealer who develops an elaborate plan to smuggle pot across the Mexican border that involves having the neighbor become part of the Miller family.

Dazed and Confused
This coming of age classic is set in the mid 1970s at a Texas high school. Not surprisingly the teens do a lot of experimentation with cannabis. The film helped launch the careers of Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey and Milla Jovovich.

Half Baked
Starring funny man Dave Chapelle, Half Baked is about a group of stoners rescuing one of their own from jail after he accidently kills a police horse. In order to raise the bail the friends turn to selling cannabis, encountering many problems along the way.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back centers on a pair of dope dealing dudes that find out someone has created a comic book based on them and that a movie featuring the cartoon is due out soon. The two opportunists decide they want a piece of the pie or a chance to block the movie’s release.
